Policy Matters

Oct 3, 2018

Our national opioid epidemic took 50,000 lives last year.   This represents a huge challenge to policymakers as they craft legal and medical measures to combat this scourge.  But it is easy to forget the human tragedy behind every one of these deaths.

In this episode, Katharine Neill Harris, fellow in Drug Policy at the Baker Institute, interviews Maureen Wittels.   Ms. Wittels is the founder of the Houston Chapter of Grief Recovery after a Substance Passing, a support group for those who have lost loved ones to substance abuse.  Ms. Wittels’ son, Harris, died from a heroin overdose at only 30 years of age.    She is committed to telling his story – and hers – in order to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
